Exhibition 2022: Savage bloom
[17 October 2022] A two person art exhibition by Danielle Malherbe and Wayne Vivier at Trent Gallery in Pretoria. Opening 4 November 18h30. Closes 16 November.
Trent Gallery in Pretoria hosts a two person show entitled ‘Savage Bloom’ by seasoned painters Danielle Malherbe and Wayne Vivier. It explores themes of endurance and decline, and uses as its anchor a line from a poem by Edna St Vincent Millay:
“Do I not know what savage blossom only under the pitting hail
Of your inclement season could have prospered?”
It becomes apparent that water is a ubiquitous element in the worlds and atmospheres contained in both artist’s work, and provides the visceral link that unifies the exhibition. Malherbe traces the manifestation of water in an artificial and modern form: the suburban swimming pool; while the ever-present vertical pattern in Vivier’s repetitions evoke, ambiguously, something between rain and digital noise. This suggests that both artists grapple with modernity and its modernisations, which brings in the themes of endurance and decline through life within this modern era; a constitutive factor of the current human condition.
