Artist statement: This series of paintings is based on selected movie stills out of Koyaanisqatsi, a non-narrative film directed by Godfrey Reggio and released in 1983. The film contentiously comments on the world of industrialization, epitomized by cities such as New York and Los Angeles. It presents this world as a synthetic construct in opposition to nature, not nature just in an ecological sense, but nature as something that is integrated meaningfully into the lives of humans, as an authentic and more 'real' environment of life.
The paintings, in turn, serially embody various narratives of modern life that the frozen images and the process of painting tell. These narratives often oppose each other and include stories of warfare and serenity, myth and science, terror and seduction, of the masses and of the individual, and of the looming catastrophe and possible salvation of modern life.
