Manifestation of love. Eminent. Love participates in time but exceeds time. That which has been revealed cannot be un-revealed. Winter cannot undo the love that grew in spring. Grass may grow and wither and return with the seasons, but the roots grow stronger every cycle. The best function of art is to preserve love, to make it endure through time. Latitudes (the horizontal) are measured in brightness, longitudes (the vertical) are measured by the darkness of eclipses (John Donne). The darkness of the cloud of unknowing, where the intellect cannot see. The mind is in a dance with our bodies, with our senses, and together they construct our aesthetic, which gives us the ability to valuate. The better developed our aesthetic, the better we valuate, and the better we recognise good, the better we see through false virtue and kitsch, and the better we know God. In this painting it seems to me that we are in a field of growing grass in the rain.
